Has anyone else noticed that, in the Department for Transport's Low Carbon Transport document (all 117 pages - published in July 2009) there is only ONE mention of motorcycles or mopeds (and none at all for scooters) and that one mention is a label on a pie chart listing CO2 production? (I searched the PDF file to check if I missed any).
Much is made of cycling for local journeys (I must mention I have no axe to grind with pedal cyclists), smaller cars, alternative fuels and public transport, but absolutely NO mention of powered two wheel vehicles as an obvious (to me anyway) solution to pollution and road congestion.
Surely, if a pedal cycle is promoted as a viable option to the car for short journeys, a moped, or small motorcycle / scooter MUST be preferable to a car for similar usage. Most modern small motorcycles have clean efficient engines (some even have catalytic converters) and surely create less pollution with high MPG rates and not having to sit in traffic queues. Why are the government so singularly opposed to powered two wheel vehicles as an option to the car, especially in cities?
Anytime I have to travel into London for work, whatever time of year, the car is abandoned in favour of my (t)rusty old CX500 - no congestion charge, vastly reduced queuing (especially as many London bus lanes are now open to us), and a lot less cost in fuel than the car. (Only a shortage of parking lets it down a bit - Boris please take note)
