MOTORCYCLE TESTS

Mopeds / Scooters

A moped is a motorcycle not weighing more than 250 kg, which has a maximum design speed not exceeding 31mph, and which does not have an engine over 50cc (and can be moved by pedals - if first used before 1 August 1977). From June 2003 all EC Type Approved mopeds have been restricted to 28 mph. Note: A scooter with an engine capacity of greater than 50cc is NOT classified as a moped (See below).

What tests do you need to ride a moped / scooter?

If you passed your car test before 1 February 2001, you are automatically entitled to ride a moped without L-plates and without taking CBT (although it is highly recommended that you do). You can also carry a passenger.

If you passed your car test on or after that date, you are required to complete Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) before riding on the road. You must be at least 16 years old to ride a moped.

You can take a full moped test but this will only entitle you to a provisional motorcycle licence.

Motorcycles and scooters with an engine capacity of greater than 50cc (up to and including 125cc)

Regardless of when you passed your car test, anyone wanting to ride a motorcycle or scooter with an engine capacity exceeding 50cc must complete a CBT before riding on the road. The rider must then display a learner plate and is NOT permitted to carry a passenger until they have completed their full motorcycle test. Learner motorcyclists can only ride motorcycles with an engine of 125cc or less and a power output not exceeding 11kW. They are also unable to use motorways. You must be at least 17 years old to ride a motorcycle or scooter with an engine capacity of between 50cc and 125cc.

Provisional motorcycle licences are valid until the age 70.

Types of licence

Category P – moped
Sub-Category A1 – light motorcycle licence, which restricts riders to any bike up to 125cc and a power output of 11kW
Category A – standard motorcycle licence
